What is the difference between ‘eso’ and ‘esto’?

 

Two important words that will really help us out are Eso and Esto. ‘Esto’ means ‘this’. ‘Eso’ means ‘that’. This is the way they work:

If someone points to something that is near them and they want to know what it is they might say “¿Qué es esto?” (What is this?). If they see something a ways away from them, and closer to the person they are talking to, they might say. “¿Qué es eso?” That seems easy enough. Keep in mind that in both cases they didn’t know what it was they were looking at or asking about.

Now, how does one respond to  ¿Qué es esto? and ¿Qué es eso? When you are asked ¿Qué es esto? and ¿Qué es eso?, you respond by using esto or eso. You can respond by saying “Eso es ____” (That is _________). or Esto es ________ (This is). It is as simple as that. Probably the most difficult thing you will have trouble with is remembering that ‘eso’ refers to something closer to the person you are talking to, and esto refers to something that is closer to yourself. In both cases, remember, you don’t know what the object (or event) is.
